Pope Francis has granted a Plenary Indulgence throughout the Centennial Year of 2018 to all Catholics of the Diocese of Lafayette.

A plenary indulgence remits all the temporal punishment for sin. That means that if you were to die in a state of grace, having obtained a plenary indulgence, and not sinned since obtaining the indulgence, you would go straight to Heaven.

This indulgence may be gained by visiting the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and praying the Centennial Prayer while inside. This is a great opportunity of grace that Pope Francis is offering to us which signifies that this 100th Anniversary is a milestone of God’s Grace that we must honor with our own faith.

The usual conditions for an indulgence must also be fulfilled.

The Centennial Prayer can be found on this webpage and on holy cards found in the Cathedral.

The indulgence will be granted to those who visit the Cathedral at any time throughout the 2018 calendar year and pray the Centennial Prayer while there.

Individuals must be baptized and in a state of grace.

Individuals must have the general intention of gaining the indulgence.

Individuals must receive Holy Communion, preferably on the same day if possible.

Individuals must worthily celebrate the Sacrament of Confession within 20 days (before or after) of performing the indulgenced act, although preferably immediately before or after.

Individuals must manifest his/her communion with the Church by praying for the intentions of the Pope, oneself, (or for a deceased soul) by praying (1) the Apostles Creed, (2) the “Our Father,” one “Hail Mary,” and concluding with “Saint John the Evangelist, Pray for me/us.” Other suitable prayers may be added, especially for the intentions of the Diocese of Lafayette.

The Holy Father has also granted to Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel the favor of offering the Papal Blessing on one occasion during the Jubilee Year. Bishop Deshotel has decided to offer the Papal Blessing at the Closing Ceremony/Mass at the Cajundome Convention Center on December 12, 2018 at 6 p.m. However, it is also possible to receive the Papal Blessing and Indulgence by watching the ceremony by television or listening to the ceremony live via radio or internet. The usual conditions (see above) are also necessary for receiving the plenary indulgence from the Papal Blessing.
