Pilgrimage is the structure of our entire lives. Psalm 84:5 reminds us that “Happy are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.” Another translation makes the clear the Psalm’s meaning “Happy are the people whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.” Zion for the Jewish pilgrim was much more than city, it signified their eternal end and God’s permanent residence among the Jewish People. As Christians, we see that our true Zion, the true destination of our life’s journey, is union with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Heaven, the heavenly Zion.
Each step of a walking pilgrimage reminds us makes us conscious of the direction of our lives, of where we are going.
